Okhla Bird Sanctuary officially known as Shaheed Chander Shekhar Azad Sanctuary. Okhla Bird Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary at the Okhla barrage over Yamuna River. It is one among fifteen bird sanctuaries in the state. Known as a haven for over 300 bird species, especially water birds.

city life for a few hours at your free time, then Okhla bird sanctuary is a must visit place for you where you will find silence and nature. 

Okhla Bird Sanctuary is situated at the entrance of Noida where river Yamuna makes a border between Delhi and Noida.
 You may or may not find migrated birds (depending upon the season) but It gives you an opportunity to leave the traffic and busy life for a while and enjoy the silence. The sanctuary is filled with silence and nature, you can hear the sound of the birds chirping and also spend some time in your free days with your families and friends, this place is a must visit if you haven’t visited it yet. The view of the Yamuna river inside the sanctuary is filled with so many birds, many different types of birds migrating from one place to another.

The sanctuary is at a size of 4 square kilometers which usually will take a few hours to visit the sanctuary. I visit there in Winter. There was no parking inside sanctuary, so I had to park my bike outside gate. There were few bikes already there so no issue and It was on main road almost so nothing to be worried. I would say just Choose your season and give yourself some time, your mind truly deserves some peace. Okhla Bird Sanctuary is a safe heaven for couples.

The nearest stations of Delhi Metro is Okhla Bird Sanctuary metro station on Magenta Line .It is easily accessible to get to the sanctuary from any part of Delhi & Noida.

1. Wild life
  • The sanctuary houses over 188 different species of plants. You will find here both native and exotic species of plants and the dense growth of foliage acts as a good refuge for the birds.

  • The sanctuary is the abode of many exotic birds and you will find 320 varied species of birds here. Among them are the water birds, woodland species, and the migratory ones. At the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, The commonly noticed birds here are the Wood Sandpiper, Western Marsh Harrier, Pied Avocet, Bristled Grassbird, Sociable Lapwing, Baer’s Pochard, Indian Skimmer, Green Bee Eater, Olive Backed Pipit and a variety of others. The colorful glimpses of birds will indeed be a fascinating experience and do carry your binoculars for a closer view. if you want to visit then come in morning 6 am to 7 am that is the best time to see whatever birds are there as birds rise early.

  • you will also come across some animals like Indian mongoose, Nilgai, jackals, black-necked hare, and various other reptiles, amphibians and colorful reptiles. On your winter visits, you can surely spot these animals as they lie basking in the sun. 

2. The Lake- One of the pristine locations in the Okhla Bird Sanctuary is the majestic lake that has been built by damming the Yamuna River and lies seated between the Okhla village and Gautam Budh Nagar.

The impressive sight of the water hyacinths along with the flock of brown-headed gulls, spot-billed ducks and other water birds is indeed a pleasing sight.

Tips

  • No Vehicle is allowed inside Okhla Bird Sanctuary except E-Rickshaw.
  • Use shoes with hard soles and good grip.
  • Don’t litter the sanctuary. Use dustbins and always carry your leftovers back.
  • Blowing of horns, playing loud music, making fire, throwing stones is strictly prohibited.
